At a time when China’s cites are regenerating at an alarming rate to meet the demands of its growing market economy, the changing social, economic and physical conditions of China’s cities have given rise to a  so-called ‘urban generation’ of Chinese cinema.   My PhD study aims to look at how China’s independent film makers explore the fabric of their contemporary urban space, and in doing so, they are able to articulate the impact of regeneration on the lives individuals and communities in China’s expanding cities.
